Robert Minkoff was born in Los Angeles, California, on May 16, 1944. He was the son of a Hollywood film director Robert Minkoff and actress/model Francesca Johnson. Robert graduated from Beverly Hills High School, in 1962.
In 1965, Robert attended University of Southern California (USC), where he majored in Theater Arts. During his time at USC, he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity and studied with renowned acting coach Milton Katselas. After graduating from USC in 1968 with a degree in Theater Arts, he worked as an assistant director to his father on The Brave Little Toaster and The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars before going on to become a director on numerous films for Disney and other studios.

Robert Minkoff began his career as an assistant director to his father, Robert Minkoff, on The Brave Little Toaster and The Brave Little Toaster Goes to Mars before going on to direct numerous films for Disney and other studios. He first directed the 1987 film Stuart Little, which he co-directed with Gary Rydstrom, followed by directing Stuart Little 2 in 1998.
He was also a member of the directing duo with Gary Rydstrom on the 1999 film Mr. Peabody & Sherman. Other films that he has directed include The Haunted Mansion (2003), The Forbidden Kingdom (2008), and The Lion King (1994) as co-director, as well as its sequels The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride (1998) and The Lion King 1½ (2004). He also directed the television film Lions of the Lamu (2003), a biopic on the life of George Adamson, who founded the Born Free Foundation.
