How do I Choose a Point-of-sale System for A Restaurant?

Restaurant POS systems are now more akin to a whole restaurant’s operating system. When shopping for a POS system for your restaurant, there are three main criteria to keep in mind:

 

1.Hardware: Right now, the only options are tablets or full-fledged computer systems. People often dislike POS systems or POS companies that use proprietary hardware, such as when you can’t use your computer and must use their computer, or when you can’t use your tablet and must use their unique tablet. At the same time, there is some wonderful stuff out there. It simply makes things more difficult for us. So, it’s kind of the first thing for us, but we have a choice;  if you’re more of an Apple user, you should go with something that works on an iPad. If you prefer PC or Android, you might want to choose anything that operates on Android-type tablets, such as Samsung tablets. If you still prefer desktop computers and believe they are better for your restaurant, look for software that you can install on a PC that you can go out and buy yourself, rather than relying on the company’s specific hardware. There are always exceptions to the rule, but that’s my starting point.

 

What kind of hardware will work best for you? Do you have a need for kiosks? Do you require self-ordering services? Do you require tablet computers? Do you require telephones? All of these are things I would consider. But, first and foremost, if you don’t have the correct hardware package, the software will be useless.

 

2.Software: Then, of course, we’ll look at the software: its features, benefits, and whether it has what you require. You’ll never find a point-of-sale system that has exactly what you want and how you want it. So, develop a list of your company’s five or ten most important or key characteristics and start there. The third step assumes that you have a hardware platform you like and a software platform you want. For me, it’ll now come down to the final factor.

 

3.Credit card processing: Because they process credit cards, many POS systems deceive you into thinking they’re cheap. They’re enslaving you to their processor, and they’re getting paid handsomely for it. Now, if the rates they’re offering you are reasonable and they’ll guarantee them, there’s nothing wrong with it. Most POS companies, on the other hand, will not. They may offer you low rates, but they cannot guarantee them, and your rates will rise as a result. You have no choice but to process through their CPU now that you’ve invested in all of this stuff. Now, in exchange for potentially increased credit card rates or a credit card rate that is not guaranteed. They provide substantial discounts on both software and hardware. That is something you must consider. If the capital state is perfect for you, but you don’t have a lot of money to invest right now, then a POS system like that might be a better option for you. For a small amount of money upfront, you’ll pay a little bit more on credit card processing in the long run. But, if you’re willing to spend some money, I’d recommend looking into a POS system that allows you to bring in your credit card processor, or at the very least, the flexibility to switch at any time.

 

Avoiding non-contractual, relatively high, locked-in credit card processing with no hardware discount is the combination that I despise the most. Many customers desire a POS system that encrypts their credit card information. They went ahead and negotiated credit card rates, and everything was secured. And since they brought this up to them and said, “You’re going to earn money on the credit card,” they got a large discount on the hardware. I want to get a deal on the gear upfront. So, once again, knowing the game’s regulations will assist you. However, when I’m looking for a POS system or assisting a customer in finding the correct one, the first thing I look at is the hardware. The software’s features and benefits are then discussed and how credit cards are processed.
